In his first game back after missing two with a high ankle sprain, Daniel Jones threw for 352 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions and led a game-winning overtime touchdown drive as the Giants topped the Redskins, 41-35, in a game billed as the Chase Young Bowl.
The Giants (4-11) blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead but survived when Kaden Smith caught a touchdown pass on third-and-goal from the 3-yard line. The Redskins never gained possession.
Young, the pass-rusher from Ohio State, is considered the best overall prospect potentially available in the upcoming draft and likely to be off the board no later than No. 2, after a quarterback to the needy Bengals. The Giants slipped out of the No. 2 position — temporarily to No. 4 — by winning a second straight game.
The Redskins tied the score with 29 seconds remaining, when backup quarterback Case Keenum capped a 99-yard game-tying drive by diving across the goal line just before fumbling. The Giants had a fourth-down stop in the end zone, but rookie cornerback Corey Ballentine was called for pass interference when he shoved the receiver on a fade route rather than playing the ball.
Jones’ last two wins are against the Redskins (3-12), with eight straight losses in between. Eli Manning made the previous starts, beating the Dolphins last week to break a franchise-record-tying nine-game skid.
Matching up against fellow rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins, Jones showed no lingering effects of his injury, after practicing in full all three days leading up to the game. This was his third game with 300 yards, at least four touchdowns and no interceptions, a stat line only matched by one other rookie in NFL history. His 352 passing yards and five touchdown throws were both season highs for the rookie.
Saquon Barkley, the Giants’ No. 2 pick in 2018, dominated with a career-high 280 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. His hard running set up the overtime score.
