Gerrit Cole had quite the reaction when he learned the New York Yankees had made him a record contract offer.
Cole recounted during his introductory press conference that he was so stunned by the Yankees’ nine year, $324 million contract offer that he was silent, which prompted an amazing quote from his agent, Scott Boras.
“G, are you there?” Cole recounted Boras saying, via Lindsey Adler of The Athletic. “You’re supposed to be (expletive) screaming right now!”
While there was no screaming, it was pretty clear Cole was overwhelmed by the amount of money the Yankees were willing to pay him. It’s not really any surprise he accepted that offer, no matter the sacrifices he had to make.
Cole had a 2.50 ERA and 326 strikeouts in 212 1/3 innings last season for the Houston Astros. He’ll be hoping his numbers continue to leave opposing hitters speechless now that he’s in New York.
