Hank Aaron, Braves legend who once held the record for most career home runs, has died. He was 86 years old.
Aaron is considered by many as one of the best baseball players of all time. He finished his career with 755 home runs, shattering Babe Ruth’s total of 714. Aaron hit his 715th home run in 1974, at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, and would remain the home run king until Barry Bonds hit his 756th home run in 2007.
But Aaron was much more than a home run hitter. In fact, the home run record was just one of the many MLB records he set when his career was over. He still has the most RBIs (2,297) total bases (6,856) and extra-base hits (1,477) in Major League Baseball history. He recorded a career batting average of .305 and had 3,771 career hits, which ranks third behind Ty Cobb (4,189) and Pete Rose (4,256).
Shortly after Aaron hit his record-breaking home run, Georgia congressman Andrew Young called him a “model of humility, dignity and quiet competence,” adding that the slugger “did not seek the adoration that is accorded to other national athletic heroes, yet he has now earned it.”
Boxing legend Muhammad Ali once called Aaron “the only man I idolize more than myself.”
