The baseball season may not start for quite some time, but the Phillies just scored big against their NL East rivals the Mets.
They signed righty Zack Wheeler to a five-year, $118 million deal yesterday.
Wheeler turned down an even larger offer from the Chicago White Sox that was in excess of $120 million making one think he may have a little bone to pick with his former team—which he’ll get to do far more often staying in their division.
The 29-year-old Wheeler was considered the prize of the free-agency class—well at least for teams that wanted starting pitching but didn’t want to compete in stratospheric bidding for Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg.
Wheeler has made 60 starts over the past two seasons, going 23-15 with a 3.65 ERA with 374 strikeouts in 377⅔ innings and will be a welcome addition for the Phil’s new skipper Joe Girardi.
